"Madness Returns" would have benefited from tighter level design with broader variety. While individual levels are gorgeous, they also drag on a bit too long, with challenges that get somewhat repetitious. And they're filled with objects that reflect Carroll's obsessions, like clocks, mirrors, playing cards and chess pieces. The environments include a sprawling steampunk factory, an expanse of undersea shipwrecks and a colossal dollhouse, and they're all beautiful in their decrepitude. She can also shrink herself, which allows her to find hidden fragments of her memory or read the warnings of an insane child who visited Wonderland before her. The action is wonderfully smooth, whether Alice is battling monsters or leaping between floating platforms. The heroine is armed with an assortment of colorful weapons: a "vorpal blade" and a hobbyhorse for melee combat, a pepper grinder and a grenade-launching teapot for ranged attacks. Characters like the Cheshire Cat, the Mock Turtle, the Walrus and the Carpenter all look quite a bit mangier, and the Mad Hatter is now a malfunctioning robot whose limbs have been stolen. This isn't the cartoon version of Wonderland it's closer to Tim Burton's 2010 movie, though even more ghoulish.Īlice herself is a raven-haired beauty, closer to the goth girls hanging around your local Hot Topic than the angelic blondes who usually play the role. The clues are scattered throughout Wonderland - but it's being destroyed by the runaway Infernal Train and consumed by Ruin Spawn, creatures made of oil, machinery and disembodied doll heads. In the first game, the girl was trying to piece together her sanity 10 years later, she's out of the asylum but trying to find out what caused her initial trauma. See, the rest of her family was killed in a fire when she was a child. McGee's Wonderland is all inside Alice's head, a fun house distortion of her dismal life in Victorian London. It's a fascinating project - in many ways, quite unlike anything else on the market in 2011 - that's undermined by occasionally sloppy programming. They have popped up in games ranging from the whimsical "Kingdom Hearts" to the grisly "Silent Hill." My final rating is a 7 but I do believe that if you like puzzle games you will enjoy this game much more than I did.If Lewis Carroll were alive today, I suspect he would enjoy playing video games. I'm not a huge fan of hack-n-slash but I can deal with them. I was unable to give this more than that because though I believe this game was good, I personally don't like puzzle games. Some of the brighter areas of the game seemed to stand out much more graphically to me personally. Graphics: Alice Madness Returns has some very whimsical looking graphics, Most places are dark and horrid looking but they managed to make it look alright. I should mention that this game is extremely twisted and had me questioning my own sanity while playing it. My only complaint is that it seemed to get more and more repetitive as I played. This game also has many jumping puzzles and a few mini games along the way. (cheshire cat is my favorite) Gameplay: This game reminded me much of God Of War in terms of game play, Alice is a hack-n-slash kind of game.
There were a few characters I liked more than others but they were all enjoyable.
Characters: The characters in Alice are quite impressive, many of your Alice in Wonderland favorites are in this game. You end up being in wonderland most of the game which is expected but after each chapter you go back to the real world. As you progress in the game you discover many more details about the fire. People think she started a fire and killed her family but she insists she didn't do it. Story: The story is about a girl name Alice Liddell who people see as mentally insane.
